Biotropica Australia personnel have extensive experience in the management of invasive species in Papua New Guinea, and especially in the Kikori River Basin where our botanists have been active for the past decade assisting clients such as ExxonMobil, Oil Search Ltd and High Arctic Energy Services. Drawing on this knowledge, ExxonMobil commissioned Biotropica to produce a weed identification guide focusing on invasive species found in the Kikori Basin, the catchment encompassing much of the PNG LNG Project Area.
Working with weed management specialists from PNG’s National Quarantine Inspection Authority (NAQIA) and Australia’s Commonwealth Department of Agriculture and Water Resources, and assisted by ExxonMobil’s own biologists, Biotropica staff have produced a full colour textbook to aid in the identification of 100 exotic plant species. Lae and Queensland Herbarium records were researched to verify the national distribution of each species to ensure the publication has value across PNG. Whilst the publication was authored by Nigel Tucker and sponsored by ExxonMobil, the publication is effectively owned by NAQIA, who will assume responsibility for the books distribution.
