Cairns Bruce Highway Upgrade – 2016

Biotropica Australia was commissioned to assess the ecological values of the natural areas that would be impacted by the proposed upgrade of two sections of the Bruce Highway. Of particular interest was the first record of Haines orange mangrove (Bruguiera hainesii) in the broad locale of one of the proposed upgrade sites.  Biotropica synthesised a range of information sources including previous surveys that had been completed, desktop information, and results of on-ground surveys into a multi-criteria analysis to determine the relative value of ecologically distinct areas within the proposed upgrade zone.  This information will allow the Department of Main Roads to consider these values when finalising their detailed designs for the upgrade.
